The Fenton Historical Society was established in 1993 as a “Not-for-Profit” organization with a 501 (C)(3) status. The society’s mission is to preserve Fenton area’s past for future generations. With that mission in mind, the Fenton History Museum was created and is now managed by the society.

Reuben E. Fenton, who was governor of New York from 1865 to 1869, had local architect Aaron Hall design the Fenton mansion in 1863. The Fenton family lived in the mansion continually until 1964, when it became the headquarters for the local historical society. Then, in 1972, the mansion was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
