- Like all Alaska, the Chilkat Center for the Arts has a history that is unique. The building itself began in the late 1800s as part of one of Alaska’s earliest canneries. In 1924, it was purchased by the U.S. Army, dismembered, floated in sections around the Chilkat Peninsula, and reconstructed as the Education and Recreational Building at its present location at historic Fort William H. Seward.
