    Maine's First Ship is dedicated to building and operating a reconstruction of Virginia, the first English ship built in the Americas in 1607. Our mission is to promote an appreciation of Maine's early shipbuilding heritage, the Popham Colony, and its relationship with the Wabanaki.

    A quarter mile north of the cranes of Bath Iron Works, Maine’s First Ship is building a replica of the 1607 pinnace Virginia to honor the 400 year legacy of quality shipbuilding in Bath. A half mile south of BIW, the Maine Maritime Museum now occupies the site of Percy and Small shipyard with many exhibits about the maritime history of Maine, including the shipbuilding in the Bath area.

    Maine’s First Ship is a project to reconstruct the 1607 Pinnace, Virginia, the first English ocean-going vessel built in the Americas. The goal is to create a floating classroom for students of all ages. The work is being done by volunteers. We gladly accept donations to help us build (and soon operate) the pinnace Virginia. Virginia is being reconstructed in and around the Bath Freight Shed in Bath Maine.

Visit - Maine’s First Ship

    Wednesday to Sunday 10am-2pm. Spring, Fall, Winter: Wednesday and Saturday: 10am-2pm. The Visitor Center is also open on Memorial Day and Labor Day, and is closed for the end of year holidays. Work on Virginia is being done most days. The boatshed, and parts of the boat yard and freight shed are active constructions sites.
