The namesake of our Chapter, Major General Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834), provided critical support for the victory. He was an experienced French Army officer who in 1777 volunteered to serve in the Continental Army without pay. After his wounding at the Battle of Brandywine (Pennsylvania), he became Washington’s protégé at Valley Forge.
