Jul 13, 2016 · In 1857, the City of Boston purchased Mount Hope Cemetery. Mount Hope was consecrated as a private cemetery in 1852. At this time, the City of Boston was seeking to develop a municipal rural cemetery. In 1857, after several years of consideration, the City purchased Mount Hope Cemetery. As of April, 23rd. 2018, Mount Hope Cemetery will officially turned 185 years old, making it one of the nations oldest garden cemeteries. Established in 1834, concurrent with the incorporation that same year of Bangor, Maine, the cemetery's host city, the Mount Hope Cemetery Corporation, beginning with fifty acres, owned roughly 264 acres of land by 1996.

It is located on 34.3 acres at Fayetteville Street and Prospect Avenue, and is a hilly pastoral well-landscaped cemetery with views of downtown. Pines, cedars, oaks and magnolia trees provide restful shade throughout the cemetery.

The city governments had decided that burial no longer would be allowed on the home place which made the establishment of a burial ground a necessity. Seven area farmers talked it over deciding to donate a certain portion of their land for use as a cemetery.
